TULSA, Okla. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team finished day one of the ITA Regional tournament Thursday. Six of the eight Hawkeyes in action today recorded victories, with three players one win away from advancing to the main draw of the tournament.
“It was a very good day for us, having won 11-of-16 matches today,” said UI head coach Steve Houghton. “Some of our wins came against very good teams and very good players.”
The team started out strong during the morning session when both Michael Swank and Andres Estenssoro won their pre-qualifying match to move into the qualify stage of the tournament. Swank dropped Stephen Washuta of SIUE, 6-2, 3-6,(10), while Estenssoro beat Vuk Poledica of Saint Louis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
In the qualifying bracket, six Hawkeyes recorded opening match victories with Swank, Estenssoro, Dominic Patrick, Chase Tomlins, Joey White, and Brian Alden all notching wins. In the afternoon session, Patrick, Tomlins, and Alden won their matches to move to the final round of the qualifying bracket. In the second round all three players won in straight sets, as Patrick beat Quinn Dippel of Creighton (6-4, 6-2), Tomlins dropped Miguel Flores of Saint Louis(6-4, 6-3), and Alden took care of Justin Abrams of Bradley (6-2, 6-2).
These three student-athletes have one more match left in qualifying play tomorrow morning, where a victory would advance them into one of the eight available spots in the main draw. Waiting for the main draw to begin are Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan, as both received automatic bids into the main draw.
“I was particularly pleased with how Alden, Tomlins, and Patrick played today,” said Houghton. “I hope all three guys can make it into the main draw tomorrow.”
The action continues Friday morning, with matches beginning at 8 a.m.
