TULSA, Okla. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the second day of the ITA Regional Tournament. The team picked up where they left off Thursday with continued success in singles play.
Dominic Patrick and Brian Alden won their final matches in qualifying play this morning, and both advance onto the main draw of the tournament. Patrick moved on after fighting his way to a tough victory over Brandon Viditch of Nebraska, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8. Alden advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 straight sets win over Charlie Shin of Nebraska. Both Hawkeyes move into the main draw of the tournament along with Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan who earned automatic berths into the main draw.
In the main draw, Patrick carried his day one success into the second day. Patrick recorded his biggest victory in his college career when he took down Daniel Santos of Tulsa, 6-4, 6-3. Santos, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, was ranked No. 26 in the world ITF Junior rankings coming into this weekend. Patrick, a sophomore from Gilbert, Ariz., moves onto the second round of the main draw to face Fablan Zierleyn of Oral Roberts.
Hagan kept the momentum going with an opening round victory of his own, beating Nic Vincent of SIUE, 7-5, 6-3. He moves on to face the top-seeded Dane Webb of Oklahoma in the second round.
Derickx rounded out the singles success Friday with a straight sets victory over Billy Paluch of Creighton, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round of the main draw, Diercxk will face ninth-ranked Marc Hermann of Nebraska.
Nils Hallestrand and Juan Estenssoro played consolation matches this morning, and both emerged victorious. Hallestrand dropped Arthur Romanet of Bradley 7-5,6-1, while Estenssoro beat Szymon Opieczonek of SIU-C, 6-3, 6-4.
In the main draw of doubles play, Alden and Hagan paced the way for the Hawkeyes with a first round victory over Pham/DeZamacona of UMKC, 8-1. The duo would later drop their next match to Kianicka/Rigby of SIU-C, 8-3.
The Hawkeyes will continue play at the ITA Regional Tournament Saturday morning.
