WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team completed the second day of play of the Big Ten Singles/Doubles Tournament Saturday afternoon with success in both singles and doubles play.
In singles play, the four remaining Hawkeyes in the main draw round of 32 competed Saturday morning. Matt Hagan and Jonas Dierckx won their matches to move into the round of 16 in the main draw.
Hagan, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, took down Mac Roy of Michigan State, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to move on. In the round of 16, Hagan was matched up against Oskar Wikberg, the No. 5 seed from Wisconsin, and fell by a final of 6-2, 6-3. The loss ended Hagan’s run in the main draw of the tournament.
Dierckx who was seeded 5th in the tournament, moved into the round of 16 with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jakhongir Jalalov of Wisconsin. Dierckx’s run to the semis was stopped short when Beau Treyz of Nebraska advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Dierckx.
“It’s good to see two guys who have been working the hardest in practice make the round of 16,” said UI assistant coach Ross Wilson. “We need to build on this and work hard in practice.”
Despite dropping out of the singles draw, the duo of Dierckx and Hagan continued their weekend success paired together in doubles.
After winning two consolation matches yesterday to move into the semi-finals of the consolation draw, Dierckx and Hagan won two more matches today to claim the doubles consolation title. In the semis the duo dropped Dzulynsky/Stavropolous of Nebraska, 8-3. In the finals, the team drew Davila/Yee of Indiana. Dierckx/Hagan easily took the title with an 8-3 victory.
“After a rough start, Matt and Jonas got things going,” said Wilson. “It shows why they could be our No. 1 doubles team after winning four matches in a row this weekend.”
Dominic Patrick, who lost his round of 32 match, dropped into the consolation bracket and advanced into the round of 16 with a 6-2 6-3 victory of Nebraska’s Ford Zitsch. In the round of 16 tomorrow morning, Patrick draws Aaron Dujovne of Purdue.
Joining Patrick in the consolation round of 16 is Brian Alden, Chase Tomlins, and Andres Estenssoro.
Alden advanced out of the consolation round of 64 with an injury defeat over Tucker Saxon of Minnesota. In the round of 32, Alden took care of Alekzander Davila of Indiana, 6-4, 6-1. In the round of 16 Alden will face Elliott Yee of Indiana.
Tomlins advances to the round of 16 after not having to play a match Saturday. In the consolation round of 64 Tomlins earned a bye to move into the round of 32. Coincidentally, Tomlins drew Iowa’s own Nils Hallestrand, who dropped his main draw match earlier in the day. Tomlins advanced after Hallestrand withdrew due to injury.
A. Estenssoro moves into the consolation round of 16 after a 6-5, retire victory over Brandon Videtich of Nebraska, and an injury defeat over Alberto Zanotti of Northwestern. Estenssoro draws Diego Acosta of Purdue in the next round.
The four remaining Hawkeyes in the consolation draw continue their run to the consolation title Sunday morning.
