IOWA CITY, Iowa — The eighth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team (7-2, 2-0) posted a 7-0 win over Missouri State (2-9) on Sunday at Grant Field in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes were led by Stephanie Norlander who scored a hat trick in the first half.

“It was great to get the win today,” said UI head coach Lisa Cellucci. “We didn’t play as well as we would have liked to throughout the entire 70 minutes, but it was great to get seven goals up on the board. We just need to be able to sharpen up our individual defense heading into next weekend.”

The Hawkeyes offensive attack erupted in the first half claiming an early 3-0 advantage over the Bears. Twelve minutes was all it took for Norlander to complete the hat trick in the opening period.

“The first time scoring I just remembered the ball coming in my direction and I said to myself, `I got it’ and took the shot,” said Norlander. The second one Mallory (Lefkowitz) was dribbling to the circle and looked at me and said `put it in’ so I took it again. The last one was a scramble around the net and I was fortunate enough to get a stick on it and knock it in for the score.”

With just under ten minutes to go in the opening period, Mallory Lefkowitz extended the home team’s lead to 4-0 scoring the first goal of her Hawkeye career.

Iowa’s offensive attack picked up right where it left off in the second half. In the 45th minute Sara Watro and Natalie Cafone pushed the lead to 6-0 with back-to-back scores just 11 seconds apart.

Emily George capped the scoring for Iowa with a career-first goal in the 61st minute marking the final score, 7-0.

Katie Jones (1-0) was credited with the win after making her first career start as goalkeeper. A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jones collected four saves in the shutout.

The Hawkeyes return to action Friday at home squaring off with Ball State at 7 p.m. (CT).
