50 Hawkeyes Named Fall Academic All-Big Ten

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Fifty University of Iowa student-athletes have been named to the 2014 Big Ten Fall Academic All-Conference team. The list includes student-athletes from football (15), women’s soccer (9), volleyball (7), women’s cross country (7), men’s cross country (6), and field hockey (6).

The six men’s cross country honorees are the most for the program since 2008 (seven selections), and the seven women’s cross country honorees are the most since 2011 (nine selections).

The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 977 fall sports athletes. The list includes 91 field hockey players, 299 football players, 77 men’s and 153 women’s cross country runners, 88 men’s and 170 women’s soccer student-athletes and 99 volleyball players.

Twenty-six of these student-athletes have maintained unblemished GPAs, including Iowa’s Lisa Gordon (cross country), Jocelyn Todd (cross country), Samantha Zishka (cross country), Sarah Mazur (women’s soccer), and Jessy Silfer (field hockey).

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be letterwinners and be in at least their second academic year at the institution. They must also carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
