HAVRE, Montana — The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated Montana State Northern, 51-0, on Friday night inside of a record crowd in Havre, Montana.
The Hawkeyes piled up bonus points in eight matches and recorded six pins to pitch their second straight shutout and improve to 16-0.
“There is excitement even when it’s lopsided and tonight was a good environment,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “The biggest thing is our best wrestling needs to come out whether it’s in the national finals or Havre, Montana. There are a lot of good reasons for coming up here.”
Junior Thomas Gilman opened the dual with a pin in 2:31. His eighth fall of the season matched a team-high for all of 90 minutes before Sam Stoll regained sole possession of the pin title with his ninth fall, decking Toby Cheff in 1:56.
Cory Clark, Brandon Sorensen, Edwin Cooper, Jr., and Sammy Brooks picked up falls in between the 125 and 285-pound bookends. Iowa also got bonus points from Patrick Rhoads‘ 26-11 technical fall at 165, and Brody Grothus‘ 13-3 major decision at 141.
The Northern Lights held Iowa to decisions at 174 and 197. Alex Meyer erased a 6-0 deficit to win 11-9, and Nathan Burak cruised to an 8-3 win to give Iowa a 45-0 lead. Stoll’s pin at 285 put Iowa over the 50-point mark for the fourth time this year, more than any other team since the 1990-91 Hawkeyes did it six times.
Iowa returns to the mat Monday, Feb. 22, to host the National Championships Dual Series. The Hawkeyes’ opponent will be announced Feb. 14. The dual starts at 7 p.m. (CT). Tickets are available at the UI Athletics Ticket Office, over the phone at 800-IA-HAWKS, or online at hawkeyesports.com.
