CHAMPAIGN, Illinois — Illinois used a four-run third inning to lift the Fighting Illini to a 7-1 victory over the University of Iowa softball team Friday evening at Eichelberger Field.

Illinois plated four runs on five hits against starting pitcher Allison Doocy in the bottom of the third. The Fighting Illini scored the four runs on two RBI singles and a pair of RBI doubles.

Doocy allowed two more runs in the fourth before senior Kenzie Ihle entered the circle in relief with runners on first and second and squashed the Illini threat.

Iowa got on the board in the fourth frame. Freshman Aralee Bogar hit a single up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out in the next at-bat. Bogar scored on a fielding error for the Hawkeyes’ only run of the contest. Iowa finished the game with three hits.

Doocy (12-11) took the loss in the circle. The sophomore allowed six runs — five earned — on nine hits and one walk in six innings of work.

QUOTING HEAD COACH MARLA LOOPER
“We were lethargic defensively and in the box. (Allison) Doocy did a nice job, but we hurt ourselves defensively. We have to be better at attacking the game. We have to be in control of us better. We need to come out tomorrow with a different approach and be ready to play.”
