Herbine Leads No. 6 Iowa Past Providence

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore Annika Herbine’s back-to-back goals in the second half sent the sixth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Providence College on Friday afternoon at Grant Field. The win is the Hawkeyes’ fourth of the season.

Herbine found the back on the goal in the 31st minute, unassisted, following off a rebound of an Olivia Frazier shot and she scored her second goal in the 41st minute off an assist by senior Sofie Stribos to give the Hawkeyes an insurance goal.

“At halftime we said it was a 0-0 game,” said Herbine. “We wanted to go out and show them who Iowa field hockey is and we got an upgrade and scored a goal (early in the second half).

“We were going for a corner or trying to get an upgrade (early in the half). OP (Frazier) hit it and it hit the goalkeeper. I just pushed it in, which was a great boost of momentum for the team. It was a great team effort.”

It was Herbine’s first career multi-goal game. She now has five goals – second on the team – this season.

Sofie Stribos deflected in Iowa’s first goal 42 seconds into the game as the Hawkeyes took advantage of an early penalty corner – the first of five in the contest. She was assisted by Anthe Nijziel and Herbine to give the Hawkeyes the early lead.

Providence’s Celia Preveza scored in the 30th minute following an assist from Cami Crook, sending the game into the break tied at one.

QUOTING ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH MICHAEL BOAL
“We won the battle of the first minute starts. It was great to see that, especially in the second half to see that reaction from halftime. It shows how good and lethal we can be. The trick for us is getting more consistency in that performance and doing those things to get us in those situations more frequently to consistently get more outcomes.

“Today was a big effort from everybody and quite a few people played in different roles and different positions. Anni played exceptional, I was glad to see her on the score sheet and we need her to continue to do that, as well as others. She doesn’t score without other people, others stepped up and that was good to see today.”

OF NOTE…
– Iowa out-shot Providence, 18-5, in the game.
– Herbine’s multi-goal game was Iowa’s fourth this season. Junior Alex Wesneski and senior Ciara Smith recorded multi-goal games in their most previous win over Saint Louis and Wesneski also scored twice in the win over Boston.
– Herbine has five goals this season. She recorded two goals in 20 games in the 2021 season.
