Hawkeyes Buck The Bisons

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — The University of Iowa softball team cruised past Bucknell, 3-0, on Sunday at The Spring Games.

Sophomore Devyn Greer (3-2) made her sixth start of the season against the Bison. She went five innings allowing no runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

Sophomore Tristin Doster had herself a day going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and threw out three runners. Senior Nia Carter continued her hot hitting going 3-for-4, extending her hit-streak to double digits (10 games).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Carter and Roman started the game with back-to-back singles but both were stranded as Bucknell retired the next three hitters. The Hawkeyes put together a two-out rally in the second, started by a triple from freshman Anna Streff. She crossed home plate for the first run on an RBI infield single from Doster.

Bucknell was amounting a threat in the third getting runners on first and third with no outs. Doster got the first out on a caught stealing at second and then on the next pitch, she hustled for a pass ball and was able to get it to Greer to tag the runner out at home.

Streff caught the Bisons defense on their heels as she was able to get to third after she reached first base on a fielder’s choice. Like the second inning, she came home to score on an RBI off the bat of Doster to stretch Iowa’s advantage to two. Through four innings, Greer had allowed no runs on two hits.

Senior Breanna Vasquez came in in relief to start the sixth inning for Iowa. She went four-up, three-down in the inning striking out one. Junior Denali Loecker added an insurance run in the seventh as she launched her seventh home run of the season to straight away center to make it 3-0.

The Bisons were able to get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Vasquez locked in and got the final batter on a strikeout. In two innings, she allowed just one hit and struck out four batters.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH RENEE GILLISPIE

“I can’t say enough about what our pitchers have done this weekend. Today Devyn had a great start, and Bre coming in and shutting the door was a great way to cap off these five games. We are getting the timely hits and putting ourselves in a position to win games”

HEAR FROM THE STUDENT-ATHLETES

“Our pitchers have been pitching great all weekend, so I was prepared for when my number was called. We’ve been playing great defense, so I was able to trust them to make the plays behind me and the bats came through to give me some breathing room.” – Greer

“I trusted in myself and my team to get the hits when we needed them and to make the outs on defense. It was a complete team effort on the win today” -Doster
