DAVIS, Calif. – The University of Iowa softball team fell to UC Davis, 3-2, in nine innings on Monday afternoon at La Rue Field.
Sophomore Jalen Adams (4-4) got the ball against the Aggies and went the distance throwing 8.2 innings. She allowed three runs on eight hits and had one strikeout. Freshman Jena Young was the lone Hawkeye to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
Adams retired the Aggie hitters in order in her first inning of work. UC Davis managed to get a runner into scoring position in the second, but Adams got out of the inning with the help of her defense.
The Hawkeyes had their first baserunner of the game after freshman Devin Bowman drew a one-out walk in the top of the fifth. Senior Sammy Diaz drove a two-out single up the middle for the first Iowa hit of the game. Junior Hannah Lindsay tied the game at one with an RBI single to centerfield.
The Aggies responded in the bottom of the inning with heads-up base running as a runner scored from second on an infield single to retake the lead, 2-1. The Hawkeyes had a response in the top of the sixth as junior Rylie Moss and Young reached base on back-to-back singles. Moss came around to score on an Aggie error to make it, 2-2.
Adams retired the Aggies in order in the seventh to send the game to extras. Iowa got a runner into scoring position in the ninth but were unable to capitalize. UC Davis loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. They knocked in the winning run on a drive to left field to walk it off.
Iowa finished the game with two runs on five hits and had no errors.
