IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball defeated Southeastern Community College, 12-0, on Friday evening at Pearl Field in a 9-inning exhibition.
The Hawkeyes used five different arms in the game. Freshman Sofia Elliot got the start for Iowa and went three innings allowing no runs on two hits and struck out one Blackhawk hitter. Redshirt freshman Mya Clark entered in relief and struck out four in two innings.
Both teams were held scoreless through three innings. Iowa got on the board on a sacrifice fly from junior Tory Bennett in the home half of the fourth inning. The Hawkeyes added seven runs in the fifth which included RBIs from Devin Simon, Tatianna Roman, Desiree Rivera, Hannah Lindsay and Bennett.
The Blackhawks had their best scoring opportunity in the seventh with runners on second and third with no outs, but Haley Downe was able to keep them off the board as the inning came to a close. Iowa extended its lead, 9-0, on a sac fly from junior Echo Mattiello. The Hawkeyes plated three in the eighth as they were able to take advantage of Blackhawk miscues.
Freshman Talia Tretton pitched the final two innings allowing no runs on no hits and struck out four.
Iowa finished the game with 12 runs on 13 hits and three SCC errors.
The Hawkeyes return to action on Saturday October 5 as they travel to Normal, Illinois for the final game of the fall season. First pitch at Illinois State is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
