THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa rowing team will travel to Des Moines, IA, Saturday for the 20th annual Subaru Head of the Des Moines Regatta. The Des Moines Rowing Club hosts the Regatta, which is held on the Des Moines River between the Botanical Center and Prospect Park. Racing is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

SEASON OUTLOOK: The Hawkeye women’s rowing team enters this season with a young but enthusiastic team. Fitness and universal technique have turned out to be the main focus of the fall season. The Novice squad has gotten off to a tremendous start with over 90 athletes trying out for the squad. Over 40 were selected. They are considered very athletic and talented which bodes well for the future of Iowa rowing.

LAST WEEK: The Hawkeyes competed at the Milwaukee River Challenge in Milwaukee, WI. The Iowa A boat caputured first place in the Varsity 8+ with a time of 23:39. The Iowa B boat came in fourth with a time of 24:43. In the Varsity 4+, the Iowa A boat finished first and the Iowa B boat finished fourth.

HEAD COACH: Mandi Kowal is in her tenth year as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Her most recent accomplishments include leading Iowa to the NCAA Championship meet three of the past seven years. Kowal was a two-time rowing World Champion in the Women’s Lightweight Four without coxswain in 1986 and 1987. She was named “Female Athlete of the Year” in 1987 by the US Rowing Association and was inducted into the United States Rowing Hall of Fame in 1997.

NEXT COMPETITION: The Hawkeyes will travel to Rockford, IL on Sunday, October 12 to compete at the Head of the Rock Regatta.
