IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s rowing team battled through chilly temperatures finishing with five medals at the 15th annual Head of the Iowa Regatta.
The Hawkeyes claimed three medals in the Women’s Varsity 2-, with the team of Megan Manijak and Nikki Stob capturing first place with a time of 16:58. Michelle Trannel and Katie Moe finished in second place with a time of 17:14. The duo of Allison Frederick and Kathleen Lehman finished in 17:20 for a third-place finish.
In the Women’s Open 8+, Iowa had two top-ten finishes. Iowa A, comprised of Sheena Williams, Megan Manijak, Lydia McGee, Michelle Trannel, Katie Moe, Emily Wagstrom, Kathleen Lehman, Emily Vail, and Nikki Stob, took second place out of a field of 21 boats. They finished only two seconds behind champion Minnesota with a time of 13:30. Iowa B finished ninth with a time of 14:21.
In the Women’s Open 4+, Boat A, comprised of Jenny Steilen, Allison Frederick, Sophie Nielsen, Leslie Stach, and Kateri Nelis, finished third in 16:00, earning the Hawkeyes their fifth medal of the day. Iowa B finished sixth out of 26 boats with a time of 16:35. In the Women’s Novice Eight, Iowa A finished 14th with a time of 16:46. Iowa C finished 15th with a time of 16:53, while Iowa B finished 22nd with a time of 17:20. Iowa D clocked in at 18:15 to finish 25th.
In the Women’s Novice 4+, Iowa A finished fourth out of 26 boats with a time of 17:46. Iowa B, C, and D finished seventh (18:03), ninth (18:31), and 18th (19:30), respectively.
The Head of the Iowa marked the final competition of the fall season for the Hawkeyes. Iowa will begin next season’s competition March 19-21, 2004, when they travel to Texas for the Longhorn Invitational.
