Hawkeyes Dominate New Hampshire, 5-0

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats in impressive style with a 5-0 victory on Sunday at Grant Field. Sarah Dawson recorded her first career hat trick and Debbie Birrell had three assists for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa’s scoring started at the 9:29 mark when Dawson chipped in a shot off a beautiful pass from Birrell to put the Hawkeyes up 1-0. Dawson scored her second goal at the 21:56 mark when she split the defense and blasted a shot into the back of the cage and the Hawkeyes entered halftime with a 2-0 lead. Ten minutes into the second half, Lauren Stiver scored off a pass from Heather Schnepf on a penalty corner. Sophomore Kara Zappone scored her second career goal at the 50:07 mark off another pass from Birrell. Dawson wrapped up the hat trick at the 59:22 from yet another pass from Birrell.

The Hawkeyes fired 24 shots and had 10 penalty corners on the day. Barb Weinberg recorded her first shutout of the year while recording three saves on the day.

Iowa travels to Evanston, IL to face the Northwestern Wildcats on Friday, September 24. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
