Sept. 13, 2005

The University of Iowa field hockey team is ranked tenth in the nation, according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and also by www.womensfieldhockey.com.

Iowa (5-2) hasn’t dropped a game since losing to No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 3 North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Iowa City three weeks ago. The Hawkeyes face a big challenge this weekend when they meet fourth-ranked Duke University in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Six of the seven teams in the Big Ten conference are ranked in the top twenty by the NFHCA. Michigan State and Penn State are fifth and sixth, respectively. Michigan slid into the eighth spot, while Indiana is ranked 12th and Ohio state is ranked 17th.

“The team has worked really hard to get to this place,” said Iowa Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Last year, we were ranked 11th in the final poll of the season, so it is nice to be ranked higher this year, especially with a younger team. We’re excited and hope to keep the momentum going into this weekend against Duke.”
