Hawkeyes Defeated By Michigan, 7-0

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated today by the 29th-ranked Michigan Wolverines. The Hawkeyes had a tough day of competition and lost all matches.

In singles, sophomore Bart van Monsjou played #47 Matko Maravic in the No. 1 match. He was defeated, 6-2, 6-4. In the No. 2 match, sophomore J.P. Ritchie was defeated by Ryan Heller, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Christian Bierich was defeated in the No. 3 match by Brian Hung, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. In the No. 4 match, senior Chaitu Malempati was defeated by Andrew Mazlin, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Brett Taylor was defeated by Steve Peretz, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot. In the No. 6 match, senior Kyle Markham was defeated by Mike DePietro, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

The Hawkeye team of Ritchie and Taylor faced 8th-ranked Hung and Maravic in the No. 1 doubles match. They were defeated, 8-2. In the No. 2 match, Malempati and van Monsjou were defeated by Heller and Mazlin, 8-6. Bierich and senior Aaron Schaechterle played the No. 3 match and were defeated by Peter Aarts and Peretz, 8-7 (3).

With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in Big Ten competition. Iowa’s next meet will be April 8 when they face the University of Wisconsin. Matches will begin at noon in Madison, WI.
