<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team hosted competition from the 64th– ranked Indiana Hoosiers today. The Hawkeyes were defeated, 7-0. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
In singles competition, sophomore Bart van Monsjou was defeated in the No. 1 match by Dmytro Ishtuganov, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. In the No. 2 match, freshman Christian Bierich was defeated by David Bubenicek, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore J.P. Ritchie was defeated by Dara McLoughlin in the No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Chaitu Malempati, usually Iowa’s No. 4 player, was out of competition today because of a stress fracture. In his place, senior Brett Taylor played the No. 4 match. He was defeated by Neil Kenner, 7-6 (6), 6-1. In the No. 5 match, freshman Greg Holm was defeated by Michael McCarthy, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore Mat Sawin competed in his first singles match of the season today. He was defeated in the No. 6 match by Arnaud Roussel, 6-0, 6-1.
The Hawkeyes tried an alternate line-up today in doubles competition. In the No. 1 match, Taylor teamed with senior Kyle Markham. They were defeated by Ishtuganov and McLoughlin, 8-2. Ritchie and van Monsjou teamed in the No. 2 match and defeated Antons and Bubenicek, 8-4. In the No. 3 match, Bierich and senior Aaron Schaechterle were defeated by McCarthy and Kenner, 8-4.
“We played fairly well in a few matches,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton, “but we seem to have a hard time sustaining.”
With this loss, Iowa falls to 5-11 overall and 0-7 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes will host their final meet of the season Sunday when they face PennState. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. at the West Campus Tennis and RecreationalCenter.
