Iowa Ends Season At Big Ten Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday. The Hawkeyes, the 11th seed, were defeated by sixth-seeded Penn State, 5-0.

The Hawkeyes fell behind early when Penn State was able to capture the doubles point. Sophomores J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou teamed in the No. 1 match to defeat Mark Barry and Slagter, 9-7. Iowa fell in the remaining two doubles matches. Seniors Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor were defeated by Ryan Berger and Bradley Hunter, 8-4, in the No. 2 match. In the No. 3 match, freshman Christian Bierich and senior Aaron Schaechterle were defeated by Brenden Lynch and Malcolm Scatliffe, 8-6.

The Hawkeyes were defeated in four quick singles matches. In the No. 1 match, van Monsjou faced No. 68 Mark Barry for the second time this season. He defeated Barry in their previous meeting, but van Monsjou lost Thursday’s match, 6-2, 6-3. Richie fell to Berger in the No. 3 match, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 5 match, Taylor was defeated by Slagter, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Greg Holm was defeated in the No. 6 match by Hunter, 6-0, 6-1. Bierich and senior Chaitu Malempati also competed in singles, but their matches did not finish.

With this loss, Iowa finishes its 2006 season. The Hawkeyes went 6-14 overall and 1-10 in the Big Ten.
