Hawkeyes Fall in Overtime Thriller

IOWA CITY, IA – In an exciting game, No.12 University of Iowa lost to No.3 Duke University at Grant Field 3-2 in overtime.

The first-half, Iowa took a limited number of shots with only one. That one shot came from a penalty corner in which sophomore Caitlin McCurdy knocked in the games first goal, assisted by senior Heather Schnepf and junior Kadi Sickel. The Hawkeyes led at halftime with a score of 1-0.

During the second-half, the Hawkeyes had another penalty corner that McCurdy scored off of giving the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead over the Blue Devils. The goal came during the 39th minute, assisted by Schnepf and Sickel. The Blue Devils scored their first goal of the game at the 42nd minute mark when sophomore Ashley Pultorak snuck a goal past Iowa’s goalkeeper Lissa Munley, making the score 2-1 in favor of Iowa.

With only a little under four minutes remaining in regulation the senior Amy Stopford scored the Blue Devils second goal of the game making the score 2-2. The Hawkeyes were awarded a corner with less than one minute of regulation remaining, but they were not able to convert a goal.

During sudden death overtime Duke senior Hilary Linton blasted the games deciding goal at the 74th minute making the final score 3-2.

The Hawkeyes were out shot by Duke 21-5 and out cornered 10-5. Munley ended the game with seven saves for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa returns to action next Saturday at 1:30 pm against Villanova at West Chester PA.
