Last Week
The University of Iowa field hockey team lost both games in overtime. On Friday, Michigan beat the Hawkeyes 2-1. Lauren Pfeiffer scored the Hawkeyes only goal of the game. Ohio State defeated the Hawkeyes 4-3 on Sunday. Two of Iowa’s three goals came from Kara Zappone. During the first 15 minutes of play Lissa Munley, Iowa goalkeeper, was tested with a number of shots. She was able to save five shots that were blasted her way, but the sixth shot snuck past her for the first goal of the game. After a time-out was called by Iowa’s Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum, the Hawkeyes took the field with a newfound energy. They marched down the field and took four shots in a short amount of time. On a penalty corner during the 32nd minute Sickel pushed the ball to Pfeiffer who smashed it past the Wolverine defense tying the score 1-1. The score remained tied throughout the half. During the second half, the Hawkeyes were very aggressive and moved the ball extremely well. Iowa out-shot Michigan 6-0 and out cornered them 4-1 during the second half, but the Hawkeyes were unable to get the ball into the goal. The score remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and the teams were headed for overtime. In overtime, Iowa was able to get the first two shots off but were unable to convert. During the 82nd minute of play Michigan forward Lucia Belassi took a pass from Mary Fox and scored the game winning goal. No. 6 Ohio State improved their record to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten Conference after Sunday’s win over the Hawkeyes. Iowa scored first when junior Lindsey Duffy tipped her third goal of the season during the 17th minute. Ohio State bounced back, scoring two goals within five minutes of each other, making the score 2-1 in favor of Ohio State. Early in the second half Hawkeye goalkeeper Munley saved two consecutive shots but on the second rebound Ohio State slipped the ball past Munley to make the score 3-1. A couple of minutes later Kara Zappone controlled a rebound and blasted the ball past the Buckeye goalkeeper. The Hawkeyes were encouraged by Zappone’s goal and began to increase the pace of the game. With only 3 minutes left the Hawkeyes were awarded a penalty corner. Pfeiffer took a shot but it was saved, and once again Zappone controlled the rebound and put the ball into the goal for her second of the game and fourth of the season. The game remained tied at the end of regulation. During overtime, Iowa was able to hold the Buckeyes from scoring on their first penalty corner. However, during the 97th minute Iowa was not able to stop them on their second corner. Yesenia Luces scored her second goal, winning the game for the Buckeyes.
Indiana
The Indiana Hoosiers have accumulated a record of 1-0 in the conference and 9-1 overall. Indiana only loss was handed to them by No. 8 Virginia. Indiana’s first Big Ten win of the season came in double overtime against Northwestern on Friday. Senior Lydia Schrott leads the Hoosiers in goals scored with 12 and points scored with 28. Schrott was named to the second all-American team in the 2005 season.
Tracey Griesbaum
Hawkeye Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum is in the middle of her seventh year leading the Hawkeyes. She has earned a record of 73-51 while playing some of the nation’s toughest competition.
Iowa Tie
Indiana Head Coach Amy Robertson was an assistant at Iowa from 1989-92. While at Iowa the Hawkeyes reached the Final Four twice. In the middle of her seventh season at Indiana, Robertson has accumulated a record of 60-65.
0-2 Doesn’t Mean Poor Finish
The last time the Hawkeyes began the Big Ten season 0-2 was in 2001. Iowa finished the season with a Big Ten record of 3-3 but won their first two games of the Big Ten Tournament earning them a spot in the championship game.
High School Reunion
Meghan Beamesderfer, Lindsey Duffy, Caitlin McCurdy, and Lissa Munley will all be teaming up to play their former high school teammates. Beamesderfer attended high school with Haley Funk, a freshmen forward. McCurdy and Munley played with Brittney Hacken a freshman midfielder. Lindsey Duffy teamed up with Danitra Castro a sophomore back and Haley Exner a junior goalkeeper.
