IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa Hawkeyes finished a four game sweep of the North Dakota State Bison Sunday afternoon, 9-7 at Banks Field. The win boosts the Hawkeyes season record to 9-5 and the loss drops the Bison to 2-13. It is the first four game sweep for the Hawkeyes since 1990 (Illinois).

“It was great to finish off the sweep today,” Iowa Head Coach Jack Dahm said. “I know we can play a lot better than we did, but we found ways to win. We were in three really close games, and we managed to pull out the win in each. That will help down the road.”

Iowa junior David Conroy started on the mound and got the win for the Hawkeyes. Conroy pitched into the sixth inning, scattering seven hits, allowing four runs and struck out three for his first win of the season. Mike Schurz finished off the Bison, throwing 1 1/3 with only one hit and to garner his third save of the year.

The Iowa offense started off slow but caught fire in the bottom of the fourth, bringing home seven runs. Sophomore Ryan Gryzwa drove in Dusty Napoleon with a single to center. With the bases loaded, Ben Geelan was hit by a pitch, allowing Brian Burmester to score. Tyson Blaser drove in two runs with a single to left. Travis Sweet singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Blaser.

Gryzwa hit his first home run of the season in the home half of the seventh inning, and Napoleon had an RBI single in the eighth to finish the scoring.

Sweet, Napoleon, Gryzwa and Kyle Riffel each had a pair of hits on the day.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Wednesday when they host Illinois State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Banks Field.
