Hawkeyes Snap Buckeyes 15-game Winning Streak

COLUMBUS, OH – The University of Iowa Hawkeyes blanked The Ohio State Buckeyes, 8-0, Saturday in game two of a double-header. The win improves the Hawkeyes to 11-7 (1-2) and the loss drops the Buckeyes to 16-4 (2-1). Iowa snapped the Buckeyes 15-game winning streak with the victory.

Starting pitcher Nick Erdman threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and striking out two. Mike Schurz pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing no runs and two hits.

The game was scoreless through four innings, but Iowa opened the fifth with a home run from Jason White. Dusty Napolean scored on a Kevin Hoef single. With two outs in the sixth, White doubled and scored on a Travis Sweet single. Sweet stole second and then scored on a Napolean RBI, making the lead 4-0.

The Hawkeyes added four more insurance runs in the seventh. Hoef scored when Caleb Curry singled and Matt Wooldrick scored on a sacrifice fly to left by White. Curry came home on Sweet’s single to right, making the score 7-0. Iowa’s last run came when Napolean singled to left for an RBI. White, Sweet and Napoleon each had 2 RBI for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes will play the Buckeyes Sunday at noon (CDT) for the final game in their four-game series.
