Iowa Defeats Michigan State, 6-1

IOWA CITY – The 55th-ranked Hawkeyes defeated Michigan State today, 6-1. Iowa moves to 8-8 on the season including 4-2 in Big Ten play.

In doubles action, Jacqueline Lee and Mili Veselinovic defeated Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler, 8-4 at the first spot, while Merel Beelen and Hillary Mintz defeated Ana Milosavlejevic and Pascale Schnitzer at the second position. At the third doubles spot, Kelcie Klockenga and Kayla Berry fell to Sarah Andrews and Jessica Baron, 8-4.

In singles action, Iowa claimed five of the six matches. Lee won at the first spot with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 over Bader, while Veselinovic defeated Schnizter at the number two spot, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1). At the third position, Hillary Mintz beat Kebler, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, and Klockenga won at the sixth position, defeating Milosavljevic, 6-2, 6-2.

Beelen continued her win streak, defeating Baron, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) at the fifth position. With the victory, Beelen now posts a record of 14-2, and has won 19 of her last 21 matches. Berry fell to Andrews at the fourth spot, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.

“We won a lot of close matches, and the final 6-1 score was not indicative of how close the match was,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “It was a good win for us, but I’m even more pleased with the way our girls competed today.”

Iowa will compete at Wisconsin, April 14th at 12 p.m., and Northwestern, April 15th at 11 a.m.
