Hawkeyes Lose In Double Overtime, 1-0

STORRS, CT –The fifth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team (17-4) lost a defensive battle today, 1-0, in double overtime to No. 11 Boston University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers scored the winning goal during the 88th minute.

Boston University controlled the ball for the majority of the game but the Hawkeyes played phenomenal defense within the circle, allowing only six shots.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, junior Caitlin McCurdy attempted two shots. The first was stopped by the diving goalkeeper and the second was too high.

At the end of regulation, the game remained scoreless. Both teams were held to no penalty corners during the second half.

With nine minutes remaining in the first overtime, Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley made an outstanding diving save allowing the Hawkeyes to play on.

Boston University’s Sarah Shute missed a scoring opportunity when she broke away from the Iowa defenders and was all alone with only Munley to beat. Shute lost her balance and allowed the Hawkeyes to take possession of the ball. The game remained tied at the end of the first overtime.

Midway through the second overtime, Suus Dukker scored the game-winning goal.

Munley played outstanding, stopping a season-high 10 shots. The Terriers held the Hawkeyes to a season low in shots (6) and penalty corners (1). All of Iowa’s shots came during regulation.
