Iowa To Face Iowa State and Michigan State

This Week
The 24th-ranked University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team will compete at Iowa State Friday and return home to host 19th-ranked Michigan State Sunday. Friday’s competition will take place at Hilton Coliseum at 7 p.m. The Hawkeyes will face Michigan State in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Sunday at 1 p.m. in a meet honoring Girl Scouts of America.

Last Competition
Iowa tied Ohio State, 195.4 earning its best team score since 2005. The Hawkeyes had event winners on vault, floor and in the all-around. Junior Jenifer Simbhudas earned a career-high 39.3 in the all-around. Simbhudas placed first on vault (9.825) and floor (9.875), and tied for second on bars (9.825). Her performance was good enough to earn her Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors. Other top scores for Iowa included freshman Houry Gebeshian on beam, earning a 9.9 to finish first. She tied for second on floor with Katie Burke (9.850). Kara Pinjuv placed second in the all-around with a 39.175 while Burke placed fourth with a 38.875.

The Hawkeyes
Iowa is ranked 24th nationally with a 4-3-1 record, while Simbhudas is sixth in the Big Ten vault rankings with an average 9.8 and fifth in conference beam rankings with a 9.7 average.

Head Coach Larissa Libby
In four years as Iowa Head Coach, Larissa Libby has recorded a 24-45-1 record. Before becoming head coach, Libby was Iowa’s associate head coach for one year and an assistant coach the previous three seasons. While associate head coach, Libby helped lead the GymHawks to a school record 49.425 beam performance in 2004. In addition to the record breaking performance, the 2004 GymHawks recorded a 49.0 or higher seven times on beam under Libby’s guidance.

Next Competition
The Hawkeyes will host Minnesota, February 29th. Competition will take place at the UI Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
