The Iowa women’s tennis team moved into day two of competition at the 2008 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday. The Hawkeyes showed up to compete once again, with sophomore Jessica Young at the forefront of the singles qualifying competition. Iowa put together a 1-0 singles record for the day and a 2-4 doubles record.
Young competed in round three of the singles qualifying draw defeating Big Ten opponent Michelle Sulahian of Michgan 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 in a tough match to move onto the main draw Saturday.
Three Hawkeye doubles teams competed in the afternoon for the main doubles draw. Alexis Dorr and Lynne Poggensee-Wei were defeated by host Michigan State’s Manon Noe and Whitney Wilson 8-2, while teammate duo Merel Beelan and Jennifer Barnes were defeated by Natalia Jaimes and Gabriella Bobrowski of Butler in a close match 8-6. The last Hawkeye pair to hit the courts was Kelcie Klockenga and Ally Majercik. They too were defeated in a tough match by Notre Dame duo Colleen Reilly and Cosmina Ciobanu 8-2.
Iowa earned two strong wins in the doubles consolation round. Poggensee-Wei/Dorr beat out Sarah Mclaughline and Emily Rogers of Northern Illinois 8-3, while Klockenga/Majercik defeated Ingrid Ballus and Yuki Kobayaski of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne 8-4.
“After the singles qualifying and the doubles first round, I was a little disappointed with our doubles results,” said Hawkeye Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “We didn’t have any bad losses, but we could have played a little bit more aggressively. That will come as the season goes on. Singles was solid and Jessica Young has been a huge highlight, winning three matches against Big Ten opponents, and has been playing some amazing tennis to get into the main draw.”
Iowa will continue into day three of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional tomorrow. The singles competition is scheduled to begin at approximately 9 a.m. with the doubles beginning at 2 p.m.
