Iowa Face-Off Against No. 5 Notre Dame

IOWA CITY-

THIS WEEK — The Iowa women’s tennis team (6-5) will travel to South Bend, IN to face No. 5 Notre Dame Friday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

HAWKEYE COMPETITORS — Competing for the Hawkeyes this week will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Alexis Dorr, Kelcie Klockenga, Sonja Molnar, Lynne Poggensee-Wei, Ally Majercik and Jessica Young.

LAST COMPETITION — Iowa opened Big Ten conference play Sunday against No. 52 Minnesota, winning 4-3 in a close meet. After dropping the doubles point, Iowa was able to come back in singles competition. Jessica Young started things off with a quick win at the No. 5 position (6-0. 6-3), followed by nationally ranked Sonja Molnar’s win (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 1 position. The win was Molnar’s tenth of the season, to bring her record to 10-1. After a loss by Alexis Dorr at the No. 2 spot, Lynne Poggensee-Wei gave the Hawkeyes the lead with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position. The Hawkeyes clinched the team win with a victory by Kelcie Klockenga at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.

HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan — Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fifth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 13-10 overall record in 2008, going 3-7 in Big Ten competition tying for a sixth place league finish. The 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Greenan has a 62-41 overall record in five seasons at Iowa. He is 103-66 in eight seasons as a collegiate head coach. Mira Radu is the assistant coach and is in her first season with the Hawkeyes. She volunteered as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi (2003-2006) following her membership on the tennis team (1999-2003).

UP NEXT — Iowa women’s tennis will travel to East Lansing, MI to face Michigan State, March 21. Competition is scheduled to begin at noon at the Michigan State Tennis Center.
