Late Rally Gives Iowa Win At Bethune-Cookman In Extras

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The University of Iowa softball team plated three runs in the top of the eighth to defeat Bethune-Cookman, 3-0, Wednesday. The Hawkeyes now stand at 23-5 overall.

After both teams were held scoreless through seven innings, the Hawkeyes came through with a big eighth inning. Sophomore Jenny Schuelke started the rally with a single and moved to second after freshman Katie Keim drew a walk. Junior Heidi Daumen sacrificed the runners to second and third with only one out and senior Erin Riemersma delievered a clutch sacrifice fly that scored Schuelke. Junior Taylor Leichsenring kept the inning alive with a ground ball that was mishandled at first base, allowing Keim to score the second run of the frame. Senior Colleen McGlaughlin then drove in Leichsenring with an RBI single.

Junior Amanda Zust turned in another strong performance in the circle, tossing a three-hit shutout for her 12th win of the season. Zust struck out four with only walk and retired the first nine Bethune-Cookman batters in order.

Iowa will wrap up its Spring Break trip Thursday when it plays at Central Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. (CT).
