May 14, 2009

SORRENTO, FL – The University of Iowa men’s golf team was able to finish its first round of NCAA regional competition Thursday, after lightening caused a delay in action. The Hawkeyes carded a 283 (-1) and are in tenth place, nine strokes ahead of 11th-ranked Indiana and only one stroke behind first-ranked Georgia. The tournament’s co-host, Central Florida, is leading the 14-team field with a score of 268 (-16). The Central Florida Regional is being held at the Red Tail Golf Club, in Sorrento, FL.

Vince India is tied for 14th after 18 holes. The sophomore led the Hawkeyes with a score of 69 (-2). Freshman Chris Brant shot a 70 (-1) and is currently tied for 24th. Sophomore Brad Hopfinger shot an even par on the day and is tied for 30th. Senior Cole Peevler and freshman Barrett Kelpin are both tied for 53rd after carding 18-hole totals of 73 (+2).

“This is a three round tournament and we’ve known that from the start,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “I was happy with our performance today, but we need to continue to use what we learn from this course and play solid golf.”

The tournament will continue tomorrow at approximately 8 a.m. (CT). Fans can follow the regional action with live scoring at golfstatresults.com.
