Hawkeyes Begin Big Ten Outdoor Championships

May 15, 2009

COLUMBUS, OH – Iowa kicked off the 2009 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday with performances in the decathlon, hammer throw, and the 10,000 meters. At the end of day one, the women’s team is currently in 9th place and the men are in 10th.

Iowa’s two junior decathletes Dan Rolling and Frank Prill finished back-to-back taking the top two spots in the 400-meter dash portion of the decathlon, with Rolling (1st, 49.68) barely edging out Prill (2nd, 50.02) and both earning new collegiate bests in that event. Rolling also put out top-five finishes in the 100-meter dash (2nd, 11.21) and the high jump (5th, 6-6). At the end of day one for the decathlon, Rolling is in 7th with 3,604 points and Prill is in 13th with 3,312 points. The two will finish the rest of the decathlon on Saturday.

In the 10,000 meters, junior Jolly Burke scored points for Iowa with a 7th place finish of 36:23.33.

“We didn’t have that many scoring opportunities today,” said Iowa women’s head coach Layne Anderson. “However, it was good to see Jolly [Burke] score points here after some setbacks in the past. We’ll just have to rest up and get back at it and take advantage of our opportunities to put points on the board tomorrow and Sunday.”

The men’s point-scorer on day one was senior Eric MacTaggart in the 10,000-meters (8th, 30:57.35). Senior Mark Schaapveld came close to scoring in the hammer throw (9th, 184-6), but still came away with an impressive new collegiate best in that event.

“We didn’t have a lot of people competing today, so there weren’t too many point-scoring opportunities,” said Iowa men’s head coach Larry Wieczorek. “We had a lot of good things going for us today though, with Eric [MacTaggart] scoring in the 10K, Dan [Rolling]’s start in the decathlon, and Mark [Schaapveld]’s good performance in the hammer throw. I think this got the ball rolling and I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend.”

Day two of the 2009 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by Ohio State University, is scheduled to begin Saturday at 8:30 am CDT and the final day of competition on Sunday is scheduled to start at 9:30 am.
