IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team lost to Iowa Central, 6-5, at Duane Banks field Friday night. In the fall season finale, Iowa’s pitching staff struck out 10 Tritons and the Hawkeye offense laced 13 base hits and laid down three sacrifice bunts but ultimately came up short.
Leading Iowa’s offense was Dallas Burke going 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a double. Mike McQuillan went 2-for-4 with a double. Dan Sheppard went 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Zach McCool went a perfect 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single and a walk. Kurt Lee drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mike Corbeil led off with base hit and was moved over to second on a Patrick Harshman sac bunt. McCool drew a walk and both runners advanced on a balk followed by a Kurt Lee base on balls to load the bases. However, with two outs, the Iowa offense came too late and an Andrew Host ground out ended the game.
The Triton offense came in swinging in the first, taking an early 3-0 lead. The inning featured four Iowa Central hits, including a two run double off the bat of Nick Johnson.
Iowa chipped away at the Iowa Central lead, plating one in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 score. With one out, McQuillan laced a double to right and was driven in by Burke with single through the right side.
The Hawkeyes tied it up, 3-3, in the bottom of the fifth. To lead off, Chett Zeise reached on a walk. Sheppard hustled down to first getting an infield single and both runners were moved over on a Host sacrifice bunt. Zeise scored on a Lee groundout. Harshman reached on a bunt base hit and on an overthrow Sheppard scored.
The Black and Gold took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, 5-3. McCool lined a pinch-hit single to lead off and was driven in on a towering Sheppard RBI double. Willis sacrifice bunted him over to third and Sheppard scored on a Lee sacrifice fly.
Iowa Central came back in the top of the eighth to lead, 6-5, via a Ryan Keele three run homer.
The Iowa bullpen featured Nick Brown, Matt Dermody, Kevin Gates, Michael Jacobs, Ricky Sandquist and Zach Robertson. The Hawkeye hurlers combined for 11 strikeouts.
