Lawrence, KS – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team recorded a win Sunday over Kansas, 6-1. The Hawkeyes are now 3-1, riding a three match win streak.
Sophomore Sonja Molnar and junior Lynne Poggensee-Wei recorded a win in a hard fought match against Erin Wilbert and Sara Lazarevic to clinch the doubles point, 9-8(3). Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga also posted an 8-4 win in doubles competition over Maria Martinez and Alessandra Dzuba.
The Black and Gold stayed tough on the courts during singles play as well. Molnar, ranked 65th nationally, took down Ekaterina Morozova, 7-6(3), 6-1. Poggensee-Wei posted a win over Lazarevic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Merel Beelen downed Martinez, 6-3, 7-5, and Klockenga defeated Vika Khanevskava in an intense match, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(4). Klockenga fought back after facing three match points in the third set to secure the victory. Alexis Dorr preserved her perfect season with a win over Dzuba, 6-0, 6-3, and Ally Majercik downed Kate Goff, 8-1.
Iowa returns to the courts Friday night when Head Coach Katie Dougherty and the Hawkeyes welcome Marquette for a 4 p.m. match. The Iowa State Cyclones come to town Sunday for an 11 a.m. match that counts in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series.
