IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team, ranked 22nd nationally, fell to No. 36 Illinois Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, 6-1. The Hawkeyes move to 3-3 in the conference and 13-4 overall.
The doubles teams struggled against the Illini, only taking one win. Merel Beelen and Sonja Molnar, ranked 15th, teamed up to take down 50th ranked Leigh Finnegan and Megan Fudge, 8-3.
Kelcie Klockenga rebounded from being down 1-4 in the first set to record a 7-5, 6-0 win over Chelcie Abajian. Junior Alexis Dorr forced a third set after falling 0-6 in the first set and bouncing back to post a 6-3 win in the second. Breanne Smutko proved to be too tough, taking the third match, 6-1, for the win.
Iowa welcomes Indiana to the Klotz Outdoor courts Sunday. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. Live stats can be found on www.hawkeyesports.com.
