THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s tennis team will participate in the ITA Central Regional and the KU Tournament this weekend. All three Iowa seniors plus junior Sonja Molnar will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in doubles and singles at the ITA Central Regional Oct. 21-25. The University of Arkansas will host the event at the Billingsley Tennis Center starting Thursday at 8:30 a.m. (CT). Freshman Christina Harazin and juniors Cassandra Escobar and Ally Majercik will compete at the KU Tournament in Lawrence, Kan., Oct. 22-24 with play beginning daily at 9:30 a.m. (CT). The tournament will be played at the Jayhawk Tennis Facility.

THE COMPETITION
At the KU Tournament, Iowa will be part of a nine team field that includes; Armstrong Atlantic, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, UMKC and Wichita State. Seventeen teams will compete at the ITA Central Regional. Draws have not been released.

LAST TIME OUT
The Black and Gold played at the Wildcat Invitational Oct. 8-10. The Hawkeyes tallied 13 singles wins and were led by senior Alexis Dorr. Dorr was the runner-up in the Flight B singles bracket, posting a 3-1 record. Fellow senior Jessica Young also posted a 3-1 record. Young advanced to the Flight C semifinals. In doubles, senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei and freshman Christina Harazin placed second in the Flight C bracket. The Wildcat Invitational marked the first time Poggensee-Wei and Harazin were paired in doubles.

MOLNAR BREAKS EVEN AT ITA ALL-AMERICAN
Hawkeye junior Sonja Molnar competed at the 26th consecutive ITA All-American Invitational Oct. 5-8. Molnar finished the tournament 3-3 overall and advanced to the tournaments main draw. All six of Molnar’s opponents were ranked in the ITA’s pre-season 125. Her three loses came against players who were ranked in the top 30. Molnar, ranked 37th by the ITA, is now 7-3 overall for the season.

HAWKEYES OPEN SEASON IN DOMINANT FASHION
Iowa opened its season at the UNI Invite Sept. 24-26. The Hawkeyes dominated, collecting 18 singles wins and compiling an 8-3 doubles record. The Black and Gold claimed two singles brackets. Junior Sonja Molnar won the Platinum Flight bracket without losing a set, while senior Jessica Young was victorious in the Gold Flight bracket. Molnar also teamed with senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei to win the Platinum Flight doubles bracket.

HEAD COACH Katie Dougherty
Head Coach Katie Dougherty is in her second season at the helm of the women’s tennis team. The Wisconsin alum guided the Black and Gold to new heights in 2010, reaching as high as 18th in the ITA national rankings, the best in program history. The Hawkeyes finished 2010 with a 17-7 overall record and a 6-4 Big Ten record. Iowa placed fourth in the conference and advanced to NCAA postseason competition.
