THIS WEEK
The 30th ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team will open the spring season at the FSU Seminole Invitational Jan. 15-17 at the Scott Speicher Center in Tallahassee, Fla. The tournament will begin with doubles play Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT).
THE COMPETITION
Iowa will be joined by host Florida State, Alabama and Central Florida. Florida State and Alabama were both included in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) initial rankings, coming in at No. 14 and No. 60, respectively. The Hawkeyes were pegged No. 30 by the ITA. Draws have not been released.

2010 FALL IN REVIEW
The Hawkeyes opened the fall season in dominating fashion at the UNI Invite by collecting 18 singles wins and compiling an 8-3 doubles record. Iowa also claimed three bracket titles. After the great start, junior Sonja Molnar traveled to the ITA All-American Invitational. She advanced to the tournament’s main draw, tallying a 3-3 record against opponents ranked in the ITA pre-season 125. While Molnar was at the ITA All-American, seniors Alexis Dorr and Jessica Young were leading the Hawkeyes at the Wildcat Invitational. Both individuals posted 3-1 marks in singles at the event. Iowa concluded its season by once again heading different directions. The Black and Gold’s three seniors and Molnar played at the ITA Central Regional while freshman Christina Harazin and juniors Ally Majercik and Cassandra Escobar competed at the KU Tournament. Molnar guided the Hawkeyes at the Central Regional, advancing to the quarterfinals in singles and the round of 16 in doubles while teaming with Lynne Poggensee-Wei. Harazin stood out for the Hawkeyes at KU, recording a 2-1 singles record and winning the tournament’s white consolation bracket.
IOWA ADDS COHEN
The Black and Gold has made one roster addition since the end of the fall schedule. Paris, France native Jessica Cohen has joined the program and will compete in the Iowa lineup during the spring season.
HEAD COACH Katie Dougherty
Head Coach Katie Dougherty is in her second season at the helm of the women’s tennis team. The Wisconsin alum guided the Black and Gold to new heights in 2010, reaching as high as 18th in the ITA national rankings, the best in program history. The Hawkeyes finished 2010 with a 17-7 overall record and a 6-4 Big Ten record. Iowa placed fourth in the conference and advanced to NCAA postseason competition.
