Fullerton, Calif. — The University of Iowa softball team dropped its DeMarini Invitational finale to Murray State, 7-2, in eight innings Sunday morning at Anderson Family Field. The Hawkeyes, who fall to 8-9 on the season, managed four hits in the contest.
Iowa got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Chelsey Carmody led off the game with a walk before moving to second on a Katie Keim sacrifice bunt. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Carmody crossed the plate when Stephanie Ochoa reached on an error.
Hawkeye starter Kayla Massey kept the Racer bats at bay, surrendering just two hits through the first four frames. Murray State, however, got to the Iowa freshman in the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs.
The Hawkeyes tied the score at two with one run on three hits in the sixth. Carmody started the Iowa rally with a one out single, and she moved to second on an error by the left fielder. Katie Keim then drove her in with an RBI double. Following an Ochoa ground out, Liz Watkins had an infield single to put two runners on, but the Hawkeyes couldn’t push any more runners across the plate.
After both squads went down in order in the seventh, Murray State erupted for five runs in the top of the eighth inning. Meghan Sims delivered the big hit for the Racers with a three run double to right centerfield.
Chelsea Lyon, who entered with two outs in the fifth inning, took the loss for the Hawkeyes. The sophomore pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits with two strikeouts.
Carmody’s sixth inning single extended her hitting streak to 17 games. Watkins paced the Hawkeyes at the plate, going 2-for-2 to go along with a walk.
Racer starter Shelby Kosmecki went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits in eight innings, while striking out a pair of Iowa batters.
Iowa (8-9) returns to action Mar. 11-13 at the Stetson Classic in DeLand, Fla. The Hawkeyes open play against Liberty and Stetson on Mar. 11.
