Ochoa Tabbed as Big Ten Player of the Week

March 21, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Stephanie Ochoa has been named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week after batting .612 with a 1.317 OPS in leading the Hawkeyes to a 4-2 record last week. The weekly honor is the first for Ochoa.

After going 1-for-5 to start the week at the Stetson Hatter Roundup, Ochoa went a perfect 4-for-4 at No. 11 Tennessee on March 17. The four hits were a career-high, and are tied for the most hits in a game by a Hawkeye player this season.

The Stanton, Calif., native closed out the week by going 5-for-6 with four runs scored and one RBI in the doubleheader sweep over South Dakota on March 20.

Ochoa’s three multi-hit games for the week give her eight on the season, and her performance lifted her batting average to .443, which is second best on the team.

“Stephanie had a great week and helped put us in position to take a game from nationally-ranked Tennessee,” said UI head coach Marla Looper. “We’re looking for her to continue this streak and her consistent play as we head into Big Ten action this weekend.”

Iowa opens Big Ten play in Columbus on Saturday, facing Ohio State beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).
