TEMPE, Ariz. – University of Iowa sophomore Ben Stancombe and redshirt freshman Jasmine Simpson recorded big throws in the men’s and women’s collegiate hammer throw competitions held Friday night at the 32nd annual Sun Angel Classic.
Stancombe, a Bloomington, Ind. native, recorded a collegiate best throw of 197-6 (60.20m). The sophomore’s previous personal best of 185-11 (56.68m) was set last year at the Iowa Invitational.
Redshirt freshman Jasmine Simpson had a breakout performance in her collegiate debut Friday night in the women’s hammer throw competition. Simpson, a Wheaton, Ill. native, placed eighth with a throw of 180-1 (54.89m). With the first competition of her collegiate career, Simpson narrowly missed setting the school record, but etched her name as Iowa’s second all-time top-performer.
Sophomore Kelsey Taylor and redshirt freshman Ashlyn Gulvas also competed in the hammer throw. Taylor recorded a mark of 162-2 (49.44m) to place 17th and Gulvas reached a personal best of 169-2 (51.56m) with her throw to earn 10th.
Competition at the Sun Angel Classic resumes Saturday.
