IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa shortstop Megan Blank has been selected as the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of Blank’s career and the first for a Hawkeye.
The Culver City, Calif., native earned the distinction after hitting .583 (7-of-12) with six runs and two steals over five games at the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas. Her performance led to her being named to the all-tournament team.
Blank reached base at nearly a 70 percent clip, getting on twice or more in four games. She went 3-for-3 against Arkansas and walked four times in the season opener against Wichita State.
The freshman stole third and scored the winning run in the 1-0 victory over Texas-Arlington. It was one of four contests in which she scored at least one run for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa returns to action Friday afternoon, playing Illinois State in its opener at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
