FULLERTON, Calif. — The University of Iowa softball team came up on the short end of a 2-0 decision to Notre Dame in its Judi Garman Classic opener Thursday morning.

The Fighting Irish pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the third inning, and that was enough as pitcher Laura Winter limited the Hawkeyes to two hits in the complete game shutout. Winter struck out six UI batters to improve to 6-5 on the season.

Iowa starter Chelsea Lyon took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in the complete game. The junior struck out five UND batters, while issuing one base on ball.

Notre Dame sent eight batters to the plate in the third inning. Jenna Simon started things off with a one out single before Alexa Maldonado followed with an RBI single up the middle to put two on. With two outs, three-hole hitter Amy Buntin gave the Fighting Irish the advantage with a two-run single to centerfield.

Winter retired the first 11 batters in order before freshman Megan Blank tallied the team’s first hit in the bottom of the fourth. Iowa threatened in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Melanie Gladden doubled to right center, but Winter got Johnnie Dowling to ground out and Ashley Akers to line out to end the threat.

Iowa (9-11) returns to action at 2:30 p.m. (CT) this afternoon, facing No. 3 Washington.
