Massey Shares Big Ten Honor

April 23, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Kayla Massey has been selected as the Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The honor is the first of her Hawkeye career.

The Foothill Ranch, Calif., native posted a 2-0 record with a 0.50 ERA in three appearances last week. She allowed 10 hits in 14 innings of work, while striking out 10. Massey shares the Pitcher of the Week honor with Wisconsin’s Cassandra Darrah.

Massey tossed a complete game shutout in the 6-0 game one victory over Michigan State on April 21, scattering four hits and matching a season-high with seven strikeouts. It was her third shutout of the season.

The sophomore then notched her second win of the weekend and 10th of the season in the series finale to close out the three-game sweep of the Spartans. She threw her second complete game, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts in Iowa’s 4-1 triumph.

Massey is the first Iowa pitcher to receive the honor since teammate Chelsea Lyon earned the distinction on April 25, 2011.

The Hawkeyes (20-22, 10-5) return to action Thursday evening, hosting Northern Iowa in a doubleheader at Pearl Field beginning at 5 p.m.
