Hawkeyes Set for Season Opener

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s tennis team will compete Friday through Sunday at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis. The University of Minnesota will host the tournament at the Baseline Tennis Center.

THE LINE-UP
Junior Christina Harazin, sophomores Morven McCulloch and Ellen Silver, and freshmen Annette Dohanics and Caitlin Hindmarsh will compete for the Hawkeyes.

THE COMPETITION
In addition to Iowa, the nine-team fi eld includes Air Force, Eastern Michigan, Gustavus, St. Catherine’s, Northern Iowa, Iowa, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Minnesota.

HAWK DUO IN PRE-SEASON RANKINGS
Junior Ruth Seaborne and sophomore Shelby Talcott are ranked No. 58 in the International Tennis Association preseason doubles rankings. Seaborne posted a 5-2 doubles record while competing for Florida State last fall. She owned a doubles record of 16-10 in 2011 and reached as high as No. 47 in the 2011 ITA doubles rankings. Talcott split time at all three doubles positions last year. She won a team best nine doubles matches last fall.

A PAIR OF HAWKEYE DEBUTS
Freshmen Annette Dohanics and Caitlin Hindmarsh will make their Hawkeye debuts this weekend. Dohanics was a fi ve-star prospect while competing at North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was ranked as high as No. 64 by TennisRecruiting.net. Hindmarsh is a freshman from Sunderland, England. She was ranked as high as No. 425 in the ITF rankings. Junior Ruth Seaborne, a transfer student from Florida State, is not competing this weekend.

HAWKEYES HOPE FOR A REPEAT
The Hawkeyes claimed four titles at the Gopher Invitational in 2011. Graduated senior Sonja Molnar and then-freshman Ellen Silver won their respective bracket championship, while then-sophomore Christina Harazin claimed the consolation championship in the McNabb Singles Flight. Molnar also claimed a doubles title, teaming with then-freshman Shelby Talcott to win the Koivu Doubles Flight Championship. The Hawkeyes posted a 24-5 singles record and a 10-5 doubles record over the three-day event.

HAWKEYE YOUTH MOVEMENT
This year’s roster includes two juniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen. This season marks the fi rst year since 2006-07 that the Iowa roster does not include a senior. That year Iowa posted a 12-10 record with two juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen.
