CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team dropped a 4-3 decision at Northern Iowa on Sunday in its final game of the Big Four Classic. The contest was played in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.
The Hawkeyes defeated Iowa State, 6-3, and fell to Drake, 3-1, on the opening day of the Big Four Classic on Saturday.
The Iowa offense cranked out 10 hits in the loss to the Panthers. Sophomore Megan Blank and senior Ashley Akers paced the visitors with three hits apiece. Akers added a run scored and a stolen base.
Four other Hawkeyes registered a hit. Senior Johnnie Dowling and junior Brianna Luna finished 1-for-4. Freshman Sammi Gyerman went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases. Senior Bradi Wall finished 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and a run scored.
Micaela Whitney took the loss for the Hawkeyes. The freshman allowed four runs (zero earned) on three hits in two innings pitched. The Omaha, Neb., native struck out one Panther.
Junior Kayla Massey pitched three scoreless innings, striking out one. Senior Chelsea Lyon tossed a scoreless frame as well.
Iowa continues fall action Friday night at 6 p.m. when it hosts Muscatine Community College at Peal Field in Iowa City.
