IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa shortstop Megan Blank was named a Preseason First Team All-Big Ten infielder by College Sports Madness Tuesday morning. College Sports Madness also selected UI softball as the No. 40 team in the country earlier in the year.

Blank, who set an Iowa school record for batting average in a season (.437) in 2013 and is the current career batting average leader (.413), was also named to the Top 50 Watch List for USA Softball Player of the Year in the preseason. The Culver City, Calif., native is a two-time All-Big Ten selection and All-Region honoree and was invited to the 2013 USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Camp last summer.

The Hawkeyes open their 2014 season this weekend at the Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C. The tournament begins with a pair of games against UNC Greensboro and host South Carolina on Friday, Feb. 7, continues with a game against Presbyterian on Saturday, Feb. 8, and concludes with a Sunday, Feb. 9 contest against Ohio.
