MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis squad was back in action at the Big Ten Indoor Singles/Doubles Championships Sunday at Baseline Tennis Center. Freshman Josh Silverstein registered two victories, earning him a spot in the Singles Main Draw Semis.
Silverstein, the 11th seed in the tournament faced, Minnesota’s Ruben Weber in a Round of 16 matchup, winning in three sets (3-6, 7-5, 6-2). Silverstein’s second match of the day was a quarterfinal, which saw him face John Patrick Mullane of Michigan State. He was able to keep the winning streak alive, defeating Mullane in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
“We had another successful day having two guys play in the quarterfinals. Josh getting through to the semifinals is big for him. He played his best tennis of the fall so far. He played great in the Round of 16 winning a long three-set match and played even better in the quarterfinals,” said interim head coach Ross Wilson.
Junior Dominic Patrick was also in action on Sunday for the Hawkeyes. He faced Gijs Linders of Michigan State in the Round of 16, where he earned a hard-fought victory (6-1, 6-2). The win set the junior up with a quarterfinal against Minnesota’s Felix Corwin, where he was outlasted by Corwin (6-4, 6-4).
“Dominic had a breakout tournament winning the doubles and making it to the quarterfinals of the singles. It is good to see all the hard work he has put in paying off,” said Wilson.
Elsewhere, the Hawkeyes also had senior Matt Hagan and freshman Lefteris Theodorou competing in the Singles Main Draw Round of 16. Tenth-seeded Hagan fell at the hands of Nebraska’s Dusty Boyer in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). Theodorou was unable to advance, falling to Matic Spec of Minnesota in a close match that went three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-4).
Andres Estenssoro, Jake Jacoby and Nils Hallestrand were all involved in consolation matches for the Hawkeyes. Estenssoro was able to see off Nebraska’s Scott Elsass in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). Like his teammate, Jacoby also found success defeating Doug Zade of Michigan State (6-2, 6-4). Hallestrand lost his match to Vasilis Stavropolous of Nebraska (7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (7)).
