IOWA CITY, Iowa – – Former University of Iowa offensive lineman David Porter will serve as honorary captain when the Hawkeyes host Illinois State on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium (11:01 a.m., BTN).
Porter earned second team All-Big Ten honors as both a junior and senior. He was a co-Most Valuable Player in 2002, when the Hawkeyes posted an 11-2 overall record in his final season. Iowa posted a perfect 8-0 mark in Big Ten play to share the league title with national champion Ohio State.
Porter, a member of Iowa’s Leadership Group, was selected to participate in the Hula Bowl following his senior season. He is a native of Belleville, Illinois, where he earned first team all-state honors as a junior and senior at Althoff Catholic High School.
Porter battled through injuries throughout his career, being granted a fifth year of eligibility. He started every game as a senior at right tackle as Iowa’s offensive line allowed just 12 sacks in 13 games. The Iowa offense that season set single-season records for points (484), touchdowns (60) and scoring average (37.2).
Porter played in all 12 games as a junior, with 11 starts, as the Hawkeyes averaged 393.5 yards total offense per game while leading the Big Ten in scoring with an average of 32.6 points per outing. The Iowa offense featured a 1,000-yard rusher (Ladell Betts) for the second straight season as Iowa ended the campaign with a 19-16 Alamo Bowl win over Texas Tech. Porter will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for Saturday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game, and on the sidelines during the contest.
