IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened 2016 with a doubleheader sweep against Missouri State on Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

The Hawkeyes won the opening match, 6-1, and blanked the Bears, 4-0, in the matinee.

Iowa opened both matches winning the doubles point, and won 34 of 42 games on the doubles side.

“I’m pleased with how we competed today, with a full team effort,” said UI head coach Katie Dougherty. “We started strong in doubles and were able to see a couple different combos that looked great. We were able to get all of our freshmen out there. It was a great way to start the season and build momentum heading into next weekend.”

Three Hawkeyes won their Iowa debuts, including freshmen Adorabol Huckleby and Kristen Thoms, and junior transfer Natalie Looney. Huckleby won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6, Thoms shutout Ekaterina Donetskova, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3, and Looney closed the door with a tiebreaker win in the second set, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

“I watched my teammates get the job done early in the match and I really wanted to get the win for them,” Looney said. “There was no question in my mind that I wasn’t going to lay it all out on the court. I went point by point and kept trying to fight my hardest on each one.”

Sophomore Zoe Douglas and junior Aimee Tarun also picked up singles wins in the opener. Douglas defeated Anelisse Torrico 6-1, 6-0 at No.2, and Tarun defeated Pheobe Boeschen 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.

Anastasia Reimchen was handed Iowa’s lone loss in the opener, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 1-0, but the sophomore bounced back with a straight-set decision in the second match. Her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anelisse Torrico was the first of three Hawkeye sweeps in the night cap.

Senior Annette Dohanics defeated Ekaterina Donetskova 6-3, 6-1 in her 2016 singles debut at the No. 3 spot, and sophomore Montana Crawford made quick work of Faty Khamissi 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. Tarun, freshman Taylor Tamblyn, and Thoms were leading their matches before Crawford’s clinch.

“Everyone put in great work in the preseason and over the break,” Dougherty said. “We have a ton of options with our lineup. Everyone did a fantastic job and I am proud of all of them.”

Iowa returns to the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation complex on Friday against Eastern Michigan at 2:30 p.m. (CT). Admission is free to the public.
