IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa cheerleading and dance teams held tryouts inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on April 21-23.
Forty dancers auditioned with a jazz routine, pom routine, and showcase of elite skills. Twenty-one dancers — 16 veterans and 5 new members — were selected. The team represents five states, including Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska.
“We have a solid foundation of 16 veterans returning off our 3rd place finish at Nationals last season,” said UI dance coach Jenny Eustice. “Our five new team members bring new skills and talent to continue to push our program to be one of the best in the nation.”
Twenty-seven cheerleaders – 21 veterans and 6 newcomers — were also chosen for the 2017-2018 season. The team is represented by student-athletes from Iowa, Illinois, Florida, Utah, and Pennsylvania.
“Tryouts went great, we had a lot of talent come in for cheer and dance,” said UI spirit squad coordinator Gregg Niemiec. “They will just help us to build an already strong core of returning veterans that we have.
“We are looking forward to where our teams can be for the first football game September 2nd, but there is a lot of time between now and then. Summer Practices, UCA/UDA Camp, and lots and lots of events. The teams are great and ready to take on the challenge. “
The Iowa Spirit Squads can be seen at Football, Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Wrestling and Women’s Gymnastics as well as other events around the University of Iowa and the state.
