3 Men's Golfers Earn B1G Preseason Honors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa juniors Alex Moorman, Alex Schaake, and senior Matthew Walker were named 2018 Men’s Golf Big Ten Preseason Honorees, the conference announced on Wednesday.
 
golf graphicSchaake, the Omaha, Nebraska, native competed in 13 events for the Hawkeyes last season. He was named to the Division I Ping All-Midwest Regional Team and All-Big Ten Second Team as a sophomore. Schaake finished 24th at NCAA Regionals with a three-round score of 220 (+7). He posted six top-25 finishes, including four inside the top-10. He kept busy over the summer beginning with a win in the Nebraska Match Play Championship in June. In July, he won the Nebraska Amateur Championship — for the third straight year — by nine strokes (-13) and competed in the Pinnacle Bank Championship, a Web Dot Com Tour event. Schaake won the Nebraska sectional qualifying event for the U.S. Amateur Championship, where he played at historic Pebble Beach in August.
 
Walker competed in all 13 tournaments last season as a junior. The Ottumwa, Iowa, native was the recipient of the Iowa Men’s Golf Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. He recorded four top-25 finishes and 10 rounds at or below par. Walker finished the season with an 18-hole scoring average of 73.69, third best on the team. He finished the Big Ten Championship with a 54-hole score of 220 (+10), tying for 31st.
 
Moorman competed in seven tournaments for the Hawkeyes last season. He finished the Hawkeye Invitational in third place — a career best finish — with a 54-hole score of 141 (-3). In the second round of the Big Ten Championships, Moorman posted an 18-hole career low and Hawkeye best 66 to tie for 15th. He finished the season second on the team with an 18-hole scoring average of 73.21 strokes per round in 14 total rounds.
 
The Hawkeyes open the 2018 season at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minnesota, Sept. 9-10.
