Hawkeyes in 7th at Royal Oaks Intercollegiate

CARROLLTON, Texas — The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished the first day of the Royal Oaks Invitational in seventh place after second round play was suspended due darkness at the par-70 Maridoe Golf Club. Iowa has a score of 293 (+21) after 33 holes of play. 
 
The second round of play will resume tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. (CT), followed by the third and final round.
 
Seven of the 13 other teams in the tournament field are ranked, including three in the top 10. The Hawkeyes lead No. 43 Baylor by one stroke, while it is just five strokes behind third-ranked Pepperdine.
 
After 33 holes of play, juniors Alex Schaake and Benton Weinberg are tied for ninth with a score of 131 (+2). Schaake has six birdies, including two on hole 14 through 33 holes. Weinberg’s eight birdies to this point are third in the field.
 
Freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero is tied for 37th with a 33-hole score of 137 (+8). Senior Matthew Walker has a 33-hole score of 138 (+9), tying for 43rd heading into the final day of play tomorrow.
 
Redshirt junior Alex Moorman has fired the only eagle (carding a two of the par-four 15th hole) of the tournament to tie for 60th with a 33-hole score of 142 (+13).

“We hit a lot of good shots and played well in long stretches. We were sloppy on the greens and need improvement there tomorrow.”
